Northern Michigan's Spas Are Selling Silence — And It's Working

Lakeside wellness retreats are booking out months ahead by offering the one thing that's gotten scarce: uninterrupted quiet.

The luxury that northern Michigan's wellness retreats are selling this year isn't a treatment or a product. It's silence. Lakeside spas built around stillness, disconnection, and long stretches of nothing to do are booking out months in advance, catering to guests desperate to unplug.

The quiet premium

The pitch inverts the usual spa script. Instead of packed itineraries, these retreats promise less — no schedule, weak cell signal by design, hours of doing nothing beside cold water and tall pines. For overstimulated visitors, that emptiness has become the whole point.

"People come here to be bored on purpose," said retreat director Astrid Lund. "They pay for permission to stop."

Beyond the massage

The treatments — massages, saunas, cold plunges in the lake — are almost secondary to the setting. The retreats lean hard on northern Michigan's landscape, using the water and forest as the main event. It's a canny read of the moment: in an economy of constant noise, a weekend of genuine quiet has become one of the state's more valuable things to sell.
