Detroit's Salon District Is Having A Loud Comeback
Empty storefronts along the city's old beauty corridor are filling with ambitious new salons — and a generation of stylists betting on Detroit.
There was a time when the stretch of storefronts that once housed Detroit's busiest salons sat mostly dark. Walk it today and the chairs are full again, the windows lit late, and the waitlists long. The city's salon district is back, driven by a wave of stylists who chose to build here rather than leave.
Betting on the block
The new operators are young, independent, and deliberate about staying local. Many trained in the suburbs or on the coasts before returning, drawn by lower rents and a client base hungry for something that feels like it belongs to the city.
"I could've opened in a strip mall out in the suburbs," said salon owner Tasha Coleman. "But the energy is here. My clients want Detroit, not a copy of it."
More than haircuts
The revival is as much cultural as commercial. These salons double as neighborhood anchors — hosting pop-ups, showcasing local product lines, and giving the corridor a nightlife it hasn't had in decades. The chairs may be about hair, but the district's comeback is about a city reclaiming a piece of itself, one blowout at a time.
