Mineral Makeup Is Back, And Michigan Estheticians Are All In

Once dismissed as chalky and limited, a new generation of mineral cosmetics is winning over sensitive-skin clients across the state.
Mineral makeup spent years with a reputation problem — remembered as chalky powders in a handful of unflattering shades. A reformulated new generation has changed the conversation, and Michigan estheticians who serve sensitive-skin clients are among its most vocal converts.
The reformulation
Modern mineral formulas have shed most of the old drawbacks: finer milling, better binders, and a far wider shade range have made them competitive with conventional makeup on wear and finish. What they've kept is a short, skin-friendly ingredient list.
"The knock on minerals used to be fair," said esthetician Carol Whitfield. "It isn't anymore. These formulas actually perform."
The sensitive-skin case
The strongest argument is for reactive skin. With fewer irritants and often some natural sun protection, mineral makeup appeals to clients whose skin rebels against heavier products. In a state where winter already leaves complexions raw, that gentleness is a real selling point — and it's pushing minerals from a niche corner back onto Michigan vanities.
