Fast Start, Hard Fall: The Spartans' September Reality Check

Michigan State opened the season 2-0 before a brutal stretch against ranked competition exposed how far the program still has to climb.
Michigan State's September was a study in contrasts: an encouraging start followed by a sobering reminder of the gap between the Spartans and the sport's upper tier.
Two wins to open
The Spartans looked the part early. They opened the season with a 30-20 win over Toledo on September 4, then dismantled Eastern Michigan 35-7 on September 12 to move to 2-0. For a program trying to rebuild its footing, the fast start offered real reason for optimism in East Lansing.
The competition stiffens
Then the schedule turned punishing. Michigan State traveled to No. 3 Notre Dame on September 19 and fell 27-10, before dropping a 31-13 decision to Nebraska on September 26. Two straight losses to stronger opponents cooled the early momentum and underscored how much separates the Spartans from the conference's best.
Where it leaves them
September left Michigan State at 2-2, a record that captures the program's current reality: good enough to beat the teams it should, not yet ready for the gauntlet beyond. With the rivalry showdown against Michigan looming later in the fall, the Spartans have time to close the gap — but September made clear just how much closing is still required.
