A signature international race and a grassroots explosion of running clubs have made Michigan one of the country's most active running states.
Running has quietly become one of Michigan's great participatory obsessions, anchored by a signature marathon that draws runners from around the world and fed by a grassroots explosion of clubs, group runs, and local races across the state.
The signature race
The state's marquee marathon — famous for its international course — is the centerpiece, drawing thousands of runners and lining the route with crowds each fall. For many Michigan runners, training for it becomes a months-long project that organizes their whole year, a goal that pulls in first-timers and veterans alike.
"Signing up for the marathon changed my life," said runner Devon Clarke. "Suddenly I had a reason to be out there at 6 a.m. in February."
The community underneath
Beneath the big race is a thriving everyday culture: running clubs that double as social clubs, group runs that welcome all paces, and a calendar packed with smaller races. It's fitness, but it's also belonging — a low-cost, come-as-you-are community that has taken deep root in Michigan. The marathon gets the headlines. The clubs and the early-morning miles are what actually keep the state running.
