Surging attendance and rising competitiveness have made volleyball one of the most exciting tickets on Michigan's college sports calendar.
One of the most electric atmospheres in Michigan college sports these days isn't at a football or basketball game — it's in a packed volleyball arena. The sport has surged in popularity and competitiveness, drawing record crowds and turning what was once an overlooked program into a genuine draw.
The attendance boom
Volleyball attendance has climbed sharply, part of a national wave that has finally reached the sport a critical mass of fans. The atmosphere — fast, loud, intimate in smaller arenas — has proven to be a perfect live experience, and Michigan programs have ridden the momentum to some of their best crowds ever.
"The energy in that gym is unreal," said athletic department staffer Priya Nadar. "People come once and they're hooked."
Rising with the tide
The competitive level has risen with the interest, as better recruiting and investment follow the fans and revenue. Michigan's programs are increasingly relevant on the national stage, feeding a virtuous cycle of success and support. Long treated as a secondary sport, volleyball is claiming a real place on the state's college athletics calendar — and the packed arenas suggest it's here to stay.
