Michigan Wages Are Rising Faster Than The Cost Of Living — Barely

For the first time in years, the average Michigan paycheck is gaining ground on prices. The lead is real, and it is thin.

After a long stretch where paychecks felt like they were shrinking even as the numbers grew, Michigan workers have finally clawed out a small advantage: wages across the state are now rising a touch faster than the cost of living.

A fragile lead

The gain is measured in single percentage points, and it is unevenly distributed. Skilled trades and healthcare workers have seen the strongest pay increases, while some service and retail workers are still running just to stay level with rent and groceries.

"'Real wage growth' sounds abstract until it's the difference between saving a little and saving nothing," said labor economist Grace Uddin. "For a lot of Michigan households, that's exactly the margin we're talking about."

What could erase it

The advantage is vulnerable to a single bad shock — a spike in housing, a jump in energy prices heading into winter, a manufacturing slowdown that stalls hiring. Workers are gaining ground, but on terrain that could shift under them. The story of the Michigan paycheck this year is cautious optimism, with heavy emphasis on cautious.
