The Used Car Market Is Finally Cooling For Michigan Buyers

After years of absurd prices, used vehicle costs are easing across the state. Buyers who waited out the frenzy are starting to find deals again.

For a stretch that felt like it would never end, a used car in Michigan cost nearly as much as a new one, and buyers took whatever they could find. That distortion is finally unwinding. Used vehicle prices are easing across the state, and the buyers who waited out the madness are beginning to find real deals.

The frenzy fades

The price spike was driven by shortages that have largely resolved, and as supply normalized, the desperation drained out of the market. Vehicles now sit on lots long enough for buyers to negotiate, inspect, and — remarkably — walk away, leverage that vanished during the crunch.

"You can be picky again," said used-car manager Gloria Fenn. "For a while, picky meant going home empty-handed. Not anymore."

Not all good news

The correction isn't uniform. Desirable trucks and enthusiast cars have held their inflated value, and anyone who bought at the peak may find their vehicle worth less than they owe. But for the ordinary Michigan family that just needs reliable transportation, the return of a sane used market is overdue relief — and a sign the whole car economy is settling back to earth.
