Inside The Grueling World Of Michigan's Physique Competitors

Behind every few minutes on stage lie months of brutal discipline. Michigan's bodybuilding and physique athletes explain what it really takes.
The few minutes a physique competitor spends on stage are the visible tip of an enormous, largely invisible commitment. Behind them lie months of punishing discipline — of diet, training, and sacrifice — that define the lives of Michigan's growing community of bodybuilding and physique athletes.
The unseen work
Competition prep is a full-time discipline layered on top of ordinary life. Athletes track every meal, structure every day around training, and endure a grueling depletion in the final weeks to achieve stage condition. The physical demands are matched by mental ones — the isolation, the obsession, the toll on relationships and social life.
"People see the stage. They don't see the twenty weeks of saying no to everything," said competitor Vanessa Lund. "That's where it's actually won or lost."
Why they do it
The rewards are rarely financial — most competitors spend more than they'll ever earn. What drives them is the pursuit of a self-imposed standard, the satisfaction of executing a brutal plan flawlessly, and the community of others who understand the obsession. Michigan's physique scene is small, intense, and quietly growing. For the people in it, the stage isn't the point. The discipline it demands to get there is.
