Michigan Shoppers Opened Their Wallets This Holiday Season

Retailers across the state reported one of their strongest holiday stretches in years, with spending tilting toward experiences and local goods.
Michigan's retailers headed into the holiday season braced for caution and got the opposite. Spending across the state ran strong through the year-end stretch, with several regional chains reporting their best holiday period in years.
Where the money went
The spending had a distinct shape. Shoppers leaned toward experiences — dining, events, travel — and toward locally made goods, a trend that benefited Michigan's independent makers and boutiques over big-box uniformity. Discount-driven doorbusters mattered less than in past years; convenience and story mattered more.
"People wanted their money to mean something," said retail analyst Bianca Ortiz. "A gift from a Michigan maker beat a generic one, even at a higher price."
The caveat
Strong holiday spending does not guarantee a strong new year. Some of the season's momentum came from consumers front-loading purchases and dipping into savings, patterns that can't repeat indefinitely. Retailers are enjoying the receipts while watching January nervously — the season proved Michigan shoppers still have appetite, but not that the appetite is bottomless.
