How K-Beauty Rewrote The Michigan Bathroom Shelf
Ten-step routines, glass-skin ambitions, and imported essences have quietly reshaped what Michigan shoppers keep by the sink.
Open a Michigan medicine cabinet these days and you're increasingly likely to find a lineup of essences, ampoules, and sheet masks that would have baffled shoppers a decade ago. Korean beauty — K-beauty — has reshaped the everyday routine, trading a bar of soap for a curated shelf of steps.
The routine as ritual
K-beauty's core idea is layering: a sequence of lightweight products, each doing one job, building toward the coveted "glass skin" glow. For a generation raised on skincare content, the routine is as much a ritual as a regimen — a nightly wind-down as well as a treatment.
"It's self-care you can hold in your hand," said Ann Arbor esthetician Joon Park, who guides clients through building routines. "That's why it stuck."
The clutter backlash
Not everyone's shelf survived intact. A growing "skinimalism" counter-trend argues that ten steps is nine too many, pushing back toward simplicity. The result is a healthy tension: Michigan bathrooms have never been better stocked, and their owners have never been more willing to argue about whether they should be.
