For local acts, the road from a Detroit dive to a national tour is long, unglamorous, and paved with van breakdowns. A few are making it.

The distance between a Detroit dive bar and a national tour is measured in years, miles, and broken-down vans. For the city's ambitious local bands, the grind toward a bigger stage is unglamorous and grueling — and a determined few are actually making the climb.

The long grind

Breaking out means relentless work: local shows to build a following, regional tours to expand it, endless self-promotion, and the financial precarity of chasing music while paying rent. Most bands never make it past the local circuit. The ones who do share a stubbornness that borders on irrational.

"You have to want it more than you want comfort, sleep, or money," said musician Priya Volkov, whose band recently completed its first national run. "Most people quit. We didn't."

The Detroit advantage

The city's deep music infrastructure helps — a supportive scene, respected venues, and a reputation that opens doors elsewhere. Coming from Detroit carries a certain credibility on the road, a nod to the city's musical pedigree. It doesn't guarantee anything, but it's a foundation. For the bands willing to endure the grind, Detroit is a good place to start the long, uncertain journey toward the big stage.
